Why the system is broken

Here’s a big part of what I personally believe is rotten about medicine, coaching, dietetics and physiotherapy in India.

An irrational belief that a degree bestows the capacity to be competent in the field.

And with many of us a false sense of confidence that our knowledge in one sphere bestows capacities in many others. It’s overreach and overconfidence.

And most importantly people won’t take us seriously because of degrees, diplomas or certifications.

It’s our capacity to foster trust, buy-in to a process, forge relationships and inspire people that what we are saying is worth listening to and following. Not just for days or week. But for months and years. And doing this creates a track-record for being effective.

I’ve heard some version of complaining that influencers suck or less qualified professionals seem to attract more eyeballs, attention and money.

While a degree and continuing education is a great sign that we are doing our bit in keeping abreast with science and modern tools to do our job, it is no guarantee that how we communicate is resonating with clients.

And that might be the thing requires greatest takeaway from watching effective influencers and coaches: it’s not enough for us to be right. Because many influencers and professionals with a following are very often wrong and frivolous.

But it’s just as important that people understand our advice, find it pragmatic and they can actually follow through what we are asking them to do. And if enough people believe that and see it through, we won’t have to convince people we are qualified. The results from our service, product or process will speak for itself.
